Kraken Substation

About the project

Dominion Energy’s Kraken Substation is a major junction along the proposed North Anna to Kraken 500-kilovolt(kV) Electric Transmission Project, a 70-mile transmission line running through Louisa, Spotsylvania, Caroline, Stafford and Culpeper counties. The planned location for the Kraken Substation is in Caroline County. For more information about the 500kV transmission project, please visit Dominion Energy’s project page.

The project was approved by PJM in February 2025. While Kraken Substation is part of Valley Link Transmission Company LLC, the substation will be designed and constructed separately with approval required from the Virginia State Corporation Commission. The Valley Link Project will strengthen the grid, support Virginia’s energy security and ensure reliable power for Virginians.

Substations are vital hubs along transmission lines, where high voltage power can be stepped down for local distribution or stepped up in order to be transmitted long distances. Substations also create economic opportunity and tax revenue for the counties in which they operate. Major economic development projects often look for locations where power is readily available, and proximity to a substation provides communities with higher energy reliability
